Latest news

Zap just announced a partnership with Chinese manufacturer Youngman Automotive Group for creating and selling electric buses, trucks, passenger vehicles including the Zap-X.

Zap and Youngman joint ventureYoungman employs 4,000 people in China, and currently has seven new vehicle factories under development with which they plan to reach an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles. They are China’s "number one luxury motor coach and high-quality commercial truck manufacturer".

Through this venture, Youngman will manufacture vehicles and components; Zap will handle sales, marketing and distribution of all vehicles they jointly produce. The deal includes creating battery- and energy-recharging infrastructure components and technology.

According to Edmunds,

The move effectively gives Zap a mammoth test bed for developing electric vehicles, and the critical infrastructure needed to support it before it can become a mainstream alternative in developed automotive markets like the United States and Europe.

Curious facts

Will boast an onboard touch-screen computer running Windows XP, with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, high-def video, iPod port, Fire-wire, USB2 ports, mini USB ports and GPS.

But the big design breakthrough of the Zap-X is achieved with four in-wheel electric motors that will give the car an inhuman combined output of 644 HP. The current most powerful SUV is the G 55 AMG Mercedes Benz at 469 HP.

Insightful quotes

Says ZAP co-founder Gary Starr,

"If you build them, they will come. There has been too much talk about electric cars, endless amounts of research, and way too much emphasis on improving the technology when today’s electric vehicles are already practical and affordable. Everyone who is saying the time is now for electric cars should go out and start driving one today."

And on the recent Zap-Youngman joint venture, Zap CEO Steve Schneider says,

"This is the most significant relationship that Zap has ever entered into. Using renewable energy to provide a cost-effective recharging infrastructure to customers, we can change the world, one vehicle at a time."

VW #1

October 1, 2007

VW #1At least that’s what they want to achieve in 10 years time.

Michael Kern, Volkswagen head of sales and marketing, says that the company aims to become the largest manufacturer in the world, both in sales and profitability, by 2015, taking the lead from current champion Toyota.

VW is currently selling six million cars annually, three million less than the top manufacturers.

How is Volkswagen planning to do this?

  • They plan to add twelve new models in the following three years, a very ambitious number
  • They will expand their presence in the United States, Russia, India and other markets, where they are currently not so strong.

VW up!The opportunity may come from the small car side. Sales of compacts are taking off not only in India, China and similar emerging markets where the middle class is growing fast, but also in mature markets that are more and more worried about the environment, such as Europe.

Here’s a photo of the VW up! presented in Frankfurt

Electric car update (Part 5): GM Volt

September 26, 2007

News and rumors regarding electric cars have been increasing in these past few months, so I thought I’d do a little reading up on the most notable models being talked about.

Today we’ll cover General Motors’ much anticipated electric car, the….

GM Volt

  • GM Volt electric carLaunch date: 2010 (?)
  • Price: Not announced, but maybe under $30,000 if production run goes as estimated. Obviously 2010 is too far off to make any certain predictions…
  • Top speed: 120 mph (190 km/h)
  • Autonomy: 40 miles (64 kms) between charges
  • Battery life: Not announced
  • Battery charge time: 6 hours
  • 0-60 MPH (0-100 km/h): 8.5 seconds
  • Chassis design: GM Global Design
  • Technology partners: A123 (batteries)
  • Company HQ: Detroit
  • CEO: Rick Wagoner
  • Sales estimates: They say 60,000 in the first year
  • Website: http://www.gm-volt.com

The latest news

General Motors showed off a great-looking Volt concept car at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit this past January.

According to GM, the Volt will be powered by a next-generation battery pack that can be recharged by the car’s small gasoline-powered, one-liter, three-cylinder engine. This gas engine is a supplement to the electric power system; it can up the Volt’s range to 640 miles (1,000 kms).

GM says the battery pack is critical for a mass release, and that the necessary technology won’t be available until 2010-12.

Curious fact

GM EV1 electric carGM pioneered electric vehicles back in 1996 with their EV1, which they later discontinued as noted in the 2006 documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car?". GM says they EV1 just wasn’t ready for the market: limited range, little interior space, the small engine could barely handle hills or the A/C, and the car had no alternative power source when the battery ran low.

Insightful quote

GM Vice Chairman Robert Lutz says that 50 percent of Americans live within twenty miles of their jobs, so they could theoretically go to work and come back on a single Volt charge. “In that case, you might never burn a drop of gas in the life of the car.”

  • Website: http://en.think.no/

Latest news

Just received $60 million in new round of funding, on top of $25 million they already had. Counts major Norwegian business magnates among investors.

Curious facts

The company was actually born at Ford, who after five years and $150 million finally sold it off.

Think will begin production later this year. Reportedly, they need to produce 10,000 cars a year to be profitable.

Batteries will be leased for $100-200 a month, not sold. When better batteries are made available, owners can simply switch over.

Cars will be sold online built specifically to the customer’s order. Test drives will be requested by text message to a Think car-sharing franchise. The City will be Internet and Wi-Fi capable, able to communicate with both driver and fellow City owners.

Insightful quote

"By leasing the battery the consumer doesn’t take the risk over the unknowns of battery life," says Think CEO Jan-Olaf Willums. "We’re moving from a car concept to a mobility concept. People look more and more at the full cost of ownership."

Latest news

The SUT’s launch date, previously late 2007, has been pushed back to at least early 2008. Phoenix says:

“We recognize that our product roll out has taken longer than originally expected as we continue to work through certification with the California Air Resources Board (ARB), finalize our financing package, and set up our production facility that will allow us to deliver at the sales volumes we are targeting.”

Phoenix also has an electric SUV in the works, plus a hybrid version of their SUT.

Ed Begley Jr. Phoenix SUTCurious fact

The SUT was unveiled at an L.A. event by actor Ed Begley, Jr., an active promoter (and user) of alternative energy.

Phoenix showed off the SUT to President Bush earlier this year, on the White House lawn.

Insightful quote

Dan Elliott, President and CEO, on their plans for a hybrid SUT:

“The development of a plug-in hybrid model of our sport utility truck is an important expansion of our model offering that we expect will meet the needs of a broader range of customers. Plug-in hybrids offer the opportunity to operate the vehicle in the most common driving environments in all-electric mode, saving money and reducing emissions, while maintaining the flexibility to travel cross-country.

“We believe a potentially large market will develop for this category of vehicle and we intend to develop a high performing vehicle that our customers can be excited to own and drive.”

The latest news

Unfortunate recent events both in auto and consumer goods safety have stung Chinese quality, so it is important to note that the company says the XS 500 will meet all U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and EU standards. Tests in the U.S. are underway right now.

Curious fact

The XS 500 is said to be comparable to the Toyota Camry in features and price.

Insightful quote

As a flip side to its low autonomy and high charge time, CEO Jeff Boyd notes that:

"… most Americans commute only about 40 miles a day and that a lot of people have second cars they use only for commuting. We don’t expect this to be most people’s primary car."
